Fall 2026 · Job moves to two markets

Relocating for Work in Oregon & Idaho.

Whether your job is moving you to the Portland Metro or Idaho's Treasure Valley, the right answer starts with the employer, then the market, then the practical details of the move itself. This page covers the big job engines in both regions, what the housing market looks like in each from local MLS data, and the honest commute, tax, and timing differences, so a work move lands as a home decision you make on purpose. If both cities are on your list, skip to the comparison table.

Idaho · Treasure Valley

Boise's semiconductor decade is underway.

Micron's multi-billion-dollar expansion is the biggest single job story in Idaho history, and the Treasure Valley is absorbing it while keeping one of the most affordable major housing markets in the West.

Semiconductors

Micron's Boise expansion

Micron is building two leading-edge memory fabs on its Boise campus: the ID1 fab is under construction with first wafers targeted for the second half of 2027, and the ID2 fab, announced in June 2025, targets production in late 2028. Combined, the two fabs represent roughly $50 billion of investment, supported by up to $6.4 billion in CHIPS Act funding, and are expected to create more than 17,000 jobs in Idaho, about 3,500 of them in direct Micron roles, plus jobs at partner companies such as ASML, Applied Materials, Lam Research, and Tokyo Electron. Micron already employs roughly 7,000 people in and around Boise, and in August 2026 announced a $10 billion Micron Research Labs facility in Boise with construction expected to start in 2027.

Diversified base

The rest of the valley economy

Beyond Micron, the Treasure Valley runs on healthcare systems such as St. Luke’s and Saint Alphonsus, education through Boise State University and the public school districts, and state and local government as the capital region. The semiconductor supply chain that is moving in with Micron adds a growing layer of engineering, trades, and manufacturing jobs across the valley.

Housing snapshot · Treasure Valley

A fast market with a reasonable price tag.

Current context: published Intermountain MLS (IMLS) data put the valley-wide median sale price near $535,000 to $545,000 in mid-2026, and the full dated tables are on the market data hub.

Practical relocation notes

What the valley runs like day to day.

  • Boise Airport (BOI) sits about 10 to 15 minutes from downtown and is the valley’s gateway for flights around the West.
  • Commutes stay compact: most cross-town drives run 15 to 25 minutes, which is one of the biggest quality-of-life shifts for people coming from larger metros.
  • Housing costs run roughly 6% above the U.S. average while utilities run below it, and Idaho charges a 6% sales tax plus a flat income tax of 5.3% for 2026.

Oregon · Portland Metro

The Silicon Forest and the swoosh, same metro.

Hillsboro and Beaverton anchor the region's two biggest employer brands: Intel's flagship manufacturing campus and Nike's world headquarters, with a deep health and software economy underneath them.

Semiconductors

Intel's Hillsboro campus

Intel's largest site sits in Hillsboro, the campus renamed Gordon Moore Park at Ronler Acres, and it remains the company's flagship research and leading-edge manufacturing location. A $3 billion cleanroom expansion, D1X Mod 3, opened in 2022, and in 2025 Intel announced plans to invest more than $36 billion in Hillsboro as part of a five-year U.S. investment plan, with roughly $1.8 billion in CHIPS Act funding aimed at Oregon facilities. Chip-sector hiring is cyclical, so check current job plans through Intel's careers pages as you time your move.

Nike's world headquarters

Nike's global headquarters spans roughly 400 acres at One Bowerman Drive in Beaverton, with more than 75 buildings and more than 11,000 employees on campus. In October 2025 Nike renamed the campus the Philip H. Knight Campus in honor of co-founder Phil Knight, and it remains the company's design and innovation heart.

Diversified base

The broader metro base

The Portland Metro area pairs its semiconductor "Silicon Forest" with software and tech companies, and a strong health sector anchored by systems such as OHSU, Providence, and Legacy. Manufacturing, logistics along the I-5 corridor, and the region’s food and beverage industry round out a base that has diversified well beyond its timber roots.

Inventory you can actually think in.

Current context: published RMLS data put the metro-wide median sale price near $540,000 in August 2026, and the full dated tables are on the market data hub.

Practical relocation notes

How the metro works for newcomers.

  • Portland International Airport (PDX) connects to downtown by MAX light rail, so airport trips can ride transit end to end.
  • The median one-way commute in the metro runs about 24 minutes, with MAX light rail, buses, WES commuter rail, and the streetcar covering close-in trips.
  • Oregon has no sales tax at the register, while its progressive income tax reaches a top marginal rate of 9.9%. Housing follows typical West Coast patterns: strong demand, wide price variation by community.
